Khmer Voice datasets

Casual Khmer speech realizes consonant clusters differently from careful speech, so the register of the recording is a controlled variable rather than a matter of chance. Sessions are kept to one register, and it is logged with the speaker record so later batches can be matched.

What voice work in Khmer requires

Enough utterances per speaker

Speaker modelling needs multiple recordings of each individual, not one recording each from many individuals. The per-speaker minimum is the number that constrains the project.

Channel consistency

A speaker recorded on two different microphones looks like two speakers to a verification model. Recording equipment has to be held constant within a speaker.

Consent that covers biometric use

Using a voice to identify a person is a different purpose from transcribing their speech, and the consent has to say so explicitly. This is the requirement most often missing.

The mistake that costs the most

The most common mistake is treating voice data as interchangeable with speech data and discovering during legal review that the consent does not cover biometric use.

The language-specific factor

Khmer script has no spaces between words, and it contains many letters that are written but not pronounced. The transcription convention has to be set first: write as spelled (orthographic) or write as spoken (phonemic). Data produced under the two conventions cannot be mixed.
