Nepali Voice datasets

Speakers of Nepali across national borders carry accents that are not documented in any standard reference, which makes recorded metadata more reliable than any assumption about region. Nationality and home region are captured per speaker, and the recruitment plan states how many speakers from each background the delivery needs.

What voice work in Nepali requires

Enough utterances per speaker

Speaker modelling needs multiple recordings of each individual, not one recording each from many individuals. The per-speaker minimum is the number that constrains the project.

Channel consistency

A speaker recorded on two different microphones looks like two speakers to a verification model. Recording equipment has to be held constant within a speaker.

Consent that covers biometric use

Using a voice to identify a person is a different purpose from transcribing their speech, and the consent has to say so explicitly. This is the requirement most often missing.

The mistake that costs the most

The most common mistake is treating voice data as interchangeable with speech data and discovering during legal review that the consent does not cover biometric use.

The language-specific factor

Usable Nepali speech data is surprisingly scarce, and the accent layers of speakers across borders (Nepal, Sikkim in India, Bhutan) are poorly mapped. Speaker metadata (nationality, home region, language of education), has to be recorded item by item.
