Tamil Voice datasets

Tamil is spoken across three countries with noticeably different accents, and the accent difference is strong enough to dominate a speaker model trained without region labels. Region is recorded per speaker, and no verification set mixes speakers from different countries in the same enrolment group.

What voice work in Tamil requires

Enough utterances per speaker

Speaker modelling needs multiple recordings of each individual, not one recording each from many individuals. The per-speaker minimum is the number that constrains the project.

Channel consistency

A speaker recorded on two different microphones looks like two speakers to a verification model. Recording equipment has to be held constant within a speaker.

Consent that covers biometric use

Using a voice to identify a person is a different purpose from transcribing their speech, and the consent has to say so explicitly. This is the requirement most often missing.

The mistake that costs the most

The most common mistake is treating voice data as interchangeable with speech data and discovering during legal review that the consent does not cover biometric use.

The language-specific factor

Written and spoken Tamil are two separate systems, and colloquial speech drops or merges a large share of sounds. Accents also differ across Tamil Nadu in India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, so speaker region has to be annotated on every record.
