Thai Voice datasets

Tone contours are part of what makes one Thai speaker distinguishable from another, so they are identity data as much as linguistic data. A change of microphone or room alters the measured contour, and a verification model reads that as a different person. Recording conditions are held constant within a speaker and logged per session.

What voice work in Thai requires

Enough utterances per speaker

Speaker modelling needs multiple recordings of each individual, not one recording each from many individuals. The per-speaker minimum is the number that constrains the project.

Channel consistency

A speaker recorded on two different microphones looks like two speakers to a verification model. Recording equipment has to be held constant within a speaker.

Consent that covers biometric use

Using a voice to identify a person is a different purpose from transcribing their speech, and the consent has to say so explicitly. This is the requirement most often missing.

The mistake that costs the most

The most common mistake is treating voice data as interchangeable with speech data and discovering during legal review that the consent does not cover biometric use.

The language-specific factor

Thai has five tones, and Thai script carries no word spacing. A sentence is one long run of continuous characters. There is no single right answer for where word boundaries go, which lets different annotators produce mutually incompatible corpora.
